200 Not Out for Podcast

The Toolstation Western League Podcast celebrated its 200th episode last week, with a bumper crop of four interviews, including an update on the campaign to allow match officials to wear bodycams.

First broadcast on October 10th 2016, the weekly podcast has carried news and interviews across the last six non-league football seasons, including the two interrupted by the Coronavirus Pandemic. As well as reviewing a selection of matches each week and looking ahead to the key fixtures to come, the Western League Podcast provides all forty clubs with an opportunity to talk about their news, on and off the pitch.

The Podcast is presented each week by Ian Nockolds and Tom Hiscott, the Editor of the Toolstation Western League bulletin.

Tom said: “We didn’t have a clue what we were doing when we started and regular listeners will probably tell you we still don’t! I think the Manager interviews have been the real key to our success. That’s what gets fans listening in every week. So I have to say a huge thank you to our Managers, without whom we wouldn’t have a podcast.”

When reflecting on the last 200 episodes, Tom and Ian both agree that the Coronavirus lockdown was a defining time for the podcast.

Ian Nockolds, who started his sports broadcasting career at Somer Valley FM, explains. “We had no football to talk about, but I think that’s when our football family needed us the most. I needed to keep my spirits up and I hope our listeners enjoyed the interviews we broadcast at that difficult time. We covered the serious stuff, but I think we had a laugh as well and we were able to talk to people about the things that don’t normally get a mention. I did a fascinating interview with Gareth Paisey from Welton Rovers about his research into the history of the Club”.
